Massage Therapy Scope of Practice

The Scope of Practice for Massage Therapy is the assessment of the soft tissues and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissue and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function and relieve pain.

Factors to Consider

It is important for you to consider the benefits, risks and alternatives to the treatment options offered and to make an informed decision about proceeding with treatment.

Treatment Includes:

Benefits

Treatment has been demonstrated to be effective for complaints of the physical body. Treatment can relieve pain and manifestations of stress including headache, altered sensations, muscle stiffness and spasm. It can also increase mobility, improve function, and reduce or eliminate the need for drugs or surgery.

Risks

The risks associated with treatment vary according to each client's conditions as well as the location and type of treatment. The risks include redness, muscle soreness and tenderness. Treatment should not cause damage that is not already injured or degenerated, but if there is a pre-existing condition, treatment, like many common daily activities, may aggravate the condition. The consequences of injury or aggravating a pre-existing condition will vary with each client. In the most severe cases, symptoms may include pain.

Alternatives

Alternatives to treatment may include consulting other health professionals. Our therapist may also prescribe home-care and/or remedial exercises with or without treatment.

Consequences of Not Getting Treatment

You may face the possibility of your pre-existing condition progressing into more advanced stages. This may bring about symptoms of worsening pain and/or inflammation, increased manifestations of stress, and consequently an increased amount of restrictions leading to further stability and functional dysfunction.

You are encouraged to ask questions at any time regarding your assessment and treatment. Bring any concerns you have to our therapist’s attention.
